Météo France placed Corsica, Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales on an orange alert this Friday because of “strong winds over eastern Corsica and in Roussillon at the end of the day”.

According to the meteorological organization, the westerly wind should "strengthen significantly" this Friday afternoon, "reaching 140 to 160 km / h on Cap Corse, 110 to 120 km / h in the Bastia region, the ridges and exposed collars ”.

🌬️ Gust of 139 km / h measured this afternoon at #Perpignan.

New record for a month of September at this station (previous record: 108 km / h, 09/24/2002).

Absolute record: 184 km / h on 01/24/2009 (storm Klaus).

The wind will then "sweep over the eastern coast, becoming particularly violent on Friday evening and in the first part of the night from Friday to Saturday, then reaching 130 or even occasionally 150 km / h", before weakening markedly in the second part of the night.

Peaks up to 140 km / h in Perpignan

In Haute-Corse, the school bus service was brought forward to 3 p.m. and disruptions were expected in air, rail and sea transport.

In the Pyrénées-Orientales, the Tramontane was blowing this Friday in gust, with peaks of up to 132 km / h on the Mediterranean coast and 140 km / h in Perpignan.

Corsica is also placed in yellow vigilance for risks of rain, floods and thunderstorms, just like the Hautes-Pyrénées and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

In these last two departments, frequent and sometimes stormy showers cause precipitation of 30 to 100 mm of water per m2.

In the six departments concerned by the orange alert, the authorities call for limiting travel, respecting bans on the use of fire, avoiding the coastline and listening to the local media.

During the night from Thursday to Friday, snow fell in the Alps and the Pyrenees, above 1,500 meters above sea level.

Due to the cooling temperatures, snowfall is expected to continue over the weekend.
