Have not “retired” after practicing medicine for more than 70 years

——"Father of Pediatric Surgery" Academician Zhang Jinzhe celebrates its 100th birthday

Academician Zhang Jinzhe is called China's "Father of Pediatric Surgery" by international colleagues. He dedicated himself to my country's pediatric surgery career and is still the soul of my country's pediatric surgery field.

On September 25, a warm and grand academic "birthday party" in the field of pediatric surgery in China was held in Beijing. Academician Zhang Jinzhe’s academic thought seminar and the 16th National Pediatric Surgery Annual Conference of the Pediatric Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association opened. Academician Zhang Jinzhe, one of the founders of my country's pediatric surgery and chief physician of Beijing Children's Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University of the National Children's Medical Center, celebrates its 100th birthday.

"Grandpa Treasure" won three more honors

At the annual academic conference, Zhang Jinzhe happily performed some magic tricks for the children who came to celebrate their birthdays.

This dexterous magic is a unique skill that Zhang Jinzhe has practiced in the outpatient clinic to coax crying children for more than 70 years.

The routine of his outpatient clinic is often like this: when receiving a doctor, the child must get up to welcome him when he comes in; in a hand clinic, he must wash his hands and rub the heat before touching the child’s skin; talk about the condition and use the "three-minute art" to tell the parents what is going on. What to do; even in the face of crying children, there are "unique skills" to make magic.

Academician Zhang advocates that doctors and patients are friends who make life, and they should "make friends before performing surgery."

Because of this, he was affectionately called "Grandpa Treasure" by the children and parents.

At this academic annual meeting, the centenary "Grandpa Treasure" once again won three honors-"Pediatric Giant Award", "Lifetime Dedication Award" and "Great Doctor Sincere" plaque.

These three honors are intended to recognize Zhang Jinzhe's outstanding contributions to my country's pediatric surgery, and to pay tribute to his dedication, truth-seeking and pragmatic spirit, and to call on doctors to learn from his role model.

He has been a pediatrician for a lifetime, saved so many children, and won so many honors, but Zhang Jinzhe’s favorite title is still the most common "Dr. Zhang".

After more than 70 years of medical experience, each of his white lab coats clearly read the five characters "Surgery Zhang Jinzhe", which can be seen clearly at a glance, making it easy for children and parents to identify.

Medical work must meet the needs of the people

In this academic "birthday party", Zhang Jinzhe also received his most valued "birthday gift", which is also his gift to the national pediatric surgery community-the new book "Zhang Jinzhe Pediatric Surgery" was unveiled.

This book is Zhang Jinzhe's summary of the development experience and academic contributions of Chinese pediatric surgery, and a comprehensive display of Chinese pediatric surgery monographs.

The first edition was published in 2014, funded by the National Publishing Fund, and recommended by the Pediatric Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association as a time-honored record of the professional development of Pediatric Surgery in New China. It is updated regularly. This is the second edition of the book.

A hundred years of life, the original intention remains unchanged.

Zhang Jinzhe has devoted his life to the cause of children's health, and has created one miracle after another.

Around 1948, neonatal subcutaneous gangrene was prevalent, extremely infectious, and the mortality rate was almost 100%.

28-year-old Zhang Jinzhe proposed that early incision of the affected area and release of pus and blood might save the child, but this bold suggestion was not supported.

In August 1949, his second daughter was unfortunately infected with subcutaneous gangrene three days after her birth.

Zhang Jinzhe decisively operated on his daughter, "I'll do that, alright!" Since then, his surgical method has caused the death rate of neonatal subcutaneous gangrene to drop from nearly 100% to 10%, and then to 5%.

In the 1960s, the incidence of Hirschsprung's disease in newborns accounted for the second place in hepato-intestinal surgery. At that time, the internationally recommended method required three operations and the postoperative mortality was high.

Zhang Jinzhe changed his mind and used his own improved design of forceps to clamp the wound in an oblique manner, waiting for the wound to heal by itself, and only one operation is required, which greatly reduces the mortality of the disease.

Zhang Jinzhe became famous after the publication of the paper "Ring clamp oblique anastomosis for Hirschsprung's disease" in 1965, and the procedure was named "Zhang's clamp" internationally.

At present, the international treatment methods named after "Zhang Jinzhe", as well as "Zhang's membrane" and "Zhang's valve", behind each of the names, contain Zhang Jinzhe's core concept and innovative spirit to alleviate the suffering of children.

He has made more than 50 inventions, edited and participated in more than 30 books.

He pioneered "Kigama" (a method of anesthesia), "Touching the belly" (a method of physical examination with bare hands), and "Scalp" (a method of fixed puncture) developed by Professor Pan Shaochuan and called "Beijing Three Absolutely".

In the special period when our country was blocked by outside technology, it played an irreplaceable role for the development of pediatric surgery.

In 2000, Zhang Jinzhe was awarded the gold medal of Dennis Brown, the highest international pediatric surgery award by the Royal Society.

The award speech read: "On behalf of more than 3,000 pediatric surgeons in a country with a population of 1.3 billion, they have made internationally recognized technical achievements; the pediatric surgery led by them has contributed to the world, especially to developing countries."

Zhang Jinzhe, who insists on innovation, said: "Medical work must meet the needs of the people." Since the 1950s, under the joint efforts of Zhang Jinzhe and his colleagues, after generations of hard work and hard work, there has never been a major in pediatric surgery in China. With rapid development, it has developed from a single discipline to more than a dozen disciplines including urology, oncology, and cardiac surgery. It has a mature medical education, research and prevention medicine system, and is gradually moving towards minimally invasive, molecular, and digitalized.

"If you want to talk about money, please don't move me."

"It is impossible to be a good doctor without dedication. A doctor with a dedicated outlook on life, curing a patient is the highest honor, happiness and enjoyment," Zhang Jinzhe said and did the same.

In the early 1980s, he used his own manuscript fees to set up a fund in the surgical office. If the child did not have enough money for medical treatment, he took it from the fund.

He has practiced medicine for more than 70 years and has never received red envelopes. For 28 years, he went to Tianjin Children’s Hospital for voluntary visits on weekends as a day without any money. He said, “I support the cause of children’s surgery. Please don't move me." In order to improve the technique and cure rate, he was not afraid of offending people, and asked the secretary of the department to set up a "medical dissatisfaction" registration; as early as the 1950s, he listed popular science as one of his work priorities. He believes in Premier Zhou Enlai’s "Knowledge must be handed over to the common people is power", and believes that understanding and listening to patients is good science. When visiting a doctor, he often takes out small science notes from his pocket...In recent years, Zhang Jinzhe has always advocated " Let mothers participate in clinical diagnosis and treatment", and put forward the eight-character communication policy of "more coaxing and less touching, more teaching and less replacement".

He always pays attention to how to make surgery painless and how to reduce the burden and pain of children with tumors.

In 1997, after he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Academician Zhang Jinzhe wrote 16 words: "Life hard work, two-sleeved breeze, three meals warm, neighbors tolerant", this is also his lifelong self-cultivation.

Today, 100-year-old Zhang Jinzhe can work, love painting and calligraphy, and can live.

Before the epidemic, he went to the hospital to work at least two days a week.

When the epidemic broke out, he wrote "There are unexpected events in the sky, and people have scientific policies" to help fight the epidemic.

On this year's "June 1" Children's Day, he also broadcasted a live broadcast to perform magic tricks for children with tumors.

He has talked about the secret of longevity on many occasions: "Work can lead to longevity. In fact, it is to ask yourself, if you can do it today, try to do it tomorrow."

Currently, he rides and exercises on an indoor bicycle every day, and insists on going to the hospital half a day a week.

After the 100-year-old spring and autumn, someone asked Zhang Jinzhe’s vision for pediatrics. He said: “I hope to make the Children’s Hospital a painless and fear-free children’s health paradise.” With this dream, the footsteps of the 100-year-old academician Zhang Jinzhe continued. Forward.
