The Mayor of New York gives 9,000 city employees unpaid leave

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced today, Wednesday, the city’s intention to expand unpaid leave for government workers to 9,000 employees for a week to save $ 21 million.

According to the new decision, all administrative and non-union employees will be required to take unpaid leave for a period of 5 days, from the first of October until the next March.

De Blasio had issued a similar decision involving him and 500 city mayor's office employees to save $ 1 million.

New York City faces a revenue deficit of $ 9 billion until next June.

The city mayor warned that up to 22,000 employees could be laid off in the absence of federal financial aid and the city was not allowed to obtain long-term loans.

"I know this is difficult news for the diligent public servants in our city ... But we are forced to take these difficult decisions in light of facing a large deficit in our budget without any help on the horizon," de Blasio was quoted by Bloomberg News.
