  • Already equipped with three low-autonomy drones, the Haute-Garonne firefighters are now equipped with a long-distance drone.

  • This new drone allows precise and real-time mapping of disaster areas to improve responsiveness and precision in ground operations.

  • Four firefighters from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) have already been trained in this new tool.

Be more responsive and more precise in reconnaissance missions and ground operations.

This is the goal of the new flying wing drone, capable of flying over great distances, which the Haute-Garonne firefighters have just acquired.

Four remote pilots were trained last week in the handling of this new machine manufactured by the Toulouse company Delair, located in Labège.

This complementary tool which will allow firefighters to map in real time a fire or flood zone in order to better target ground operations.

The Toulouse-based company Delair, a drone manufacturer in Labège, was responsible for this training.

For fires but also floods

"It is very interesting for interventions on fires in assembly where it is not easy to access the start of the fire, the drone maps in real time the disaster area and after analysis on the ground, it allows to communicate with elected officials and help a precise inventory, underlines Captain Olivier Ricard, Deputy Chief of Codis de Haute-Garonne, who participated in this training.

For floods, it is also useful to determine streets under water or to see if people are waiting for help on the roofs ”.

The Haute-Garonne firefighters were already equipped with three drones but with flight capacities limited to thirty minutes.

With this new long-distance drone, autonomy climbs to 45 minutes, enough to map a hundred hectares.

After having configured his flight plan, the remote pilot takes off the machine by throwing it by hand.

The drone then follows the programmed route to then land like a bird at the end of its mission.

Precision of 1 to 2 cm on the ground

For Bastien Mancini, CEO of Delair, “this drone allows flight with a ground resolution precision of 1 to 2 cm.

It is a new market that is developing with Civil Security.

The Bouches-du-Rhône firefighters have already acquired a long-distance drone ”.

While the drone does not replace the work of firefighters, it allows faster decision-making and avoids the flight of a helicopter, which is much more expensive.

Ultimately, eight pilots in total will be trained in this type of drone at Codis de Haute-Garonne.
