It is unclear why the whales have been stranded.
It is common for whales to get caught in the area, but they have not had such a large stranding in ten years.
The rescue operation is expected to take several days and now people on site are trying to assess which of the animals are healthy enough to be rescued.

The animals are spread over a large area in a challenging environment, so we will start by rescuing the animals with the best chance of survival.
Some animals will simply be too big or in an overly awkward place, says marine biologist Kris Carlyon.
So far, 25 whales have been rescued.
