One study, "Migration of university graduates ...", has compared how graduates in 2013 move throughout the country, while the other, "Should I stay or move" has focused on Umeå University.

A closer look at the national study shows that although it is becoming more common for students to move to their place of study, there are fewer and fewer who stay after the end of their education.

And the higher and longer the education, the more people are moving.

In Umeå, 71 percent of the students left the municipality after graduation, compared with, for example, Gothenburg at 37 percent and Linköping at 55 percent.

- There are of course many reasons why students move.

Social reasons such as moving closer to relatives and friends are one reason, but what seems to matter most are the employment opportunities in the region together with income levels and career opportunities, says Rikard Eriksson, professor of economic geography at the Department of Geography at Umeå University and one of the authors of the thesis "Should I stay or move?"

Hear more from Rikard Eriksson but also how the students think about staying in the Umeå area - or moving after the education.
