Washington imposes sanctions on the Iranian Defense Ministry and the Venezuelan President

On Monday, the United States announced the imposition of a series of sanctions targeting the Iranian Defense Ministry and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, as part of the UN sanctions against Iran.

"Our actions today are a warning that the entire world should hear," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump signed a decree authorizing "severe economic sanctions against any country, company or individual that contributes to providing, selling and transporting conventional weapons to Iran," according to Trump's national security adviser Robert O'Brien.

In this context, the Venezuelan president, which Washington considers illegal, has been targeted.

"For nearly two years, corrupt officials in Tehran have been working with the illegal regime in Venezuela to circumvent the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations," Pompeo added.

Also, US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin, who participated in the same press conference in Washington, announced measures against the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization.
