The duration of paternity leave will double to 28 days, compared to 14 currently.

The measure, which will be included in the Social Security financing bill voted at the end of the year, will come into force from July 1, 2021.

The duration of paternity leave will double and increase to 28 days, the Elysee said on Tuesday, allowing France, a time at the forefront on the subject, to make up part of its delay compared to the best European students.

When France introduced paternity leave in 2002 - 11 days in addition to the 3 days of birth leave - it was ahead of most of its neighbors.

But since then, many European countries have adopted more generous measures.

Part of the leave will be compulsory

The commission of the first 1000 days recommended 9 weeks, it will ultimately be 4, or 28 days.

Currently, paternity leave is 14 days.

Part of this leave will now be compulsory.

Because today, one in three fathers does not take his leave immediately after birth, especially people on precarious contracts who are afraid of being looked down upon by their employers.

The government will specify in the coming months the number of days to be taken.

This reform will be included in the Social Security financing bill passed at the end of the year.

But the first dads will benefit from this measure only from July 1, 2021. This extension of paternity leave will cost the State 500 million euros more per year.
