The Canadian Bianca Andreescu, 7th in the world, who had given up defending her title at the US Open, formalized Tuesday her withdrawal for Roland-Garros, which begins on Sunday, due to a persistent injury.

"I had to resolve to make the difficult decision not to take part in the clay court tournaments this year and give up playing the rest of the season to focus on my health and my resumption of training," explained the 20-year-old player on her Twitter account.

"I have a lot of things waiting for me in 2021, including the Olympics. So I want to take this time to focus on my recovery and my game to come back stronger and better than ever," added the winner. of the US Open 2019.

Andreescu has not played competitively since the Shenzhen tournament in October 2019, from which she withdrew due to a knee injury.

A new injury, which occurred in the spring, then forced her to postpone her return.

While she had initially announced her participation in the US Open, she finally backtracked, arguing that the context of the pandemic had not allowed her to sufficiently prepare.

Her package for the Parisian Grand Slam is in addition to those already announced by the Japanese Naomi Osaka, winner of the last US Open, and that of Roger Federer, 4th in the world, both due to injuries.

The title holder at Roland Garros, Ashleigh Barty has given up on coming to defend her title because of the coronavirus epidemic.
