  • United Kingdom: New restrictions in the north of England due to Covid-19

The chief scientists and doctors of the British Government, Patrick Vallance and Chris Witty, have called on the population to "change the course" of the fight against the coronavirus and have warned that the rebound in infections could reach 50,000 cases daily in mid-October and 200 deaths per day in November.

In an unusual joint appearance, paving the way for new restrictions to be announced this week by Boris Johnson, Vallance and Witty warned that "speed and action" will be needed to "break the chain of infections" and cited Spain and France as examples of the scenarios the UK intends to avoid.

Both acknowledged that the country faces "severe restrictions" in the next six months.

Scientific officials from the Johnson Government acknowledged that new cases in the British Isles exceed 6,000 a day (notably above the 3,899 detected by tests on Sunday).

The current trend is for

cases to double every seven days.

"The virus is moving in the wrong direction and if we continue like this we will soon be in a difficult situation," warned Patrick Wallance.

"To curb exponential growth, you will have to find a balance and take difficult steps."

Scientific officials hinted that the recently introduced "rule of six" (forbidden meetings of more than six people) may even be insufficient to stop the spread of the virus and that the priority will be "to

prevent people from different households from mixing.

"

The British Government plans to introduce a 10 p.m. curfew in pubs and restaurants and is considering the possibility of a new closure.

From this week, Covid-19 patients who do not comply with the 14-day self-isolation may be

fined 10,000 pounds (11,500 euros).

Medical officials warned that there is no evidence that the virus has weakened, nor that it can be compared to a seasonal flu, and argued that the decrease in mortality is mainly due to

improved treatments

.

Vallance and Witty expressed their hope that the introduction of a vaccine will help to turn the trend towards winter.
