The Qatar Red Crescent launched a relief campaign to help those affected by the floods disaster in Sudan, under the name "Safety Oh Sudan". The campaign raised nearly 90 million riyals within two days of its launch.

The Qatar Red Crescent did not wait for the completion of the campaign, but rather directed, through its representative mission in Sudan, to distribute urgent food aid in cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent, to cover urgent relief needs from providing urgent support to emergency and health facilities, distributing food to affected families, and temporary repair of homes.

The campaign "Peace, Oh Sudan", in which the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, participated in the amount of 50 million riyals, and achieved nearly 90 million riyals within two days of its launch, which indicates the Qatari popular sympathy with Sudan in the unprecedented flood crisis that befell the country.

After the arrival of its teams in the affected areas in Sudan, the Qatar Red Crescent is currently working to implement an expanded intervention plan to help those affected by the floods - focusing on the sectors of food security, urgent shelter, water, health services and risk reduction - for a total of 120,000 people.

A rapid intervention plan at a cost of 12 million Qatari riyals is being implemented, which includes a rapid assessment to determine the detailed needs and lists of beneficiaries in the targeted areas, the provision of food baskets in the medium term for the benefit of 20 thousand families, and the contribution to the work of housing 10 thousand families through the distribution of non-food items.

In addition, 300 temporary shelter tents have been installed for families who have been displaced from their homes, the implementation of the restoration of 100 damaged public facilities, the support, reconstruction and rehabilitation of livelihoods affected by the floods, and the implementation of the withdrawal of stagnant water, spraying pesticides and purification of drinking water in order to reduce From the spread of epidemics and diseases.

Facing floods and Corona

Confronting the floods were not the only aid that the Qatar Red Crescent sent to Sudan this month. Rather, two batches of humanitarian aid shipments sent by the Qatar Red Crescent in cooperation with its Turkish counterpart arrived in Khartoum to support the local response capabilities to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The Secretary-General of the Qatar Red Crescent explained to Al-Jazeera Net that the two shipments included 25 tons of medical materials and devices that will enable hospitals and quarantine centers in Sudan to treat people with Covid-19 disease, pointing to the continued delivery of medical aid to more health institutions in order to support them in facing Virus spread.

In North Kordofan, the visiting Qatari delegation signed a cooperation agreement with the Sudanese side to implement a new project in the field of water and environmental sanitation, including the establishment of 8 drinking water purification stations in a number of regions.

The Secretary-General of the Qatar Red Crescent stated that this project provides clean water to more than 20,000 people from the state’s residents, indicating that this project is part of joint projects between the Qatari Red Crescent and its Sudanese counterpart.
