Coronavirus in Belgium: the milestone of 100,000 cases has been crossed

Belgium has now passed the milestone of 100,000 coronavirus infections, after a marked acceleration in positive tests in recent weeks.
It joins the peloton of European countries with the most contamination such as Spain and Sweden.

The number of positive cases has increased by 65% since the beginning of September.
At the same time, the number of tests is breaking records, with 33,000 exams on average per day.
The rate of people positive for the
coronavirus has
reached an unprecedented level since the start of deconfinement in May.
This recrudescence of infections is accompanied by a very slight increase in hospitalizations.
It has nothing to do with the numbers at the end of March, at the height of the crisis.
There is also no rebound in mortality, because the vast majority of those tested positive are under 30 years old, experts explain, with perhaps a “
re-entry
”
effect
.
This increase in infections will be closely scrutinized by the authorities on Wednesday, during a new National Security Council.
In particular, it will be a question of restrictions in social contacts to reduce the spread of the coronavirus in the long term.
