The European Commission on Friday urged European governments to speed up the rollout of 5G in the EU.

In France, 70 elected officials have asked for a moratorium on this technology, which will make it possible to obtain better throughput and increase the performance of connected devices.

Coordinator of this action, the lawyer and EELV advisor from Paris, Émile Meunier, was the guest of Europe 1 on Saturday.

INTERVIEW

"I will not pass judgment, but to refer us environmentalists to the 'past' is a mistake. For me, ecology is synonymous with progress."

Guest of Europe 1, Saturday, Émile Meunier, EELV advisor in Paris and lawyer, reacted to Emmanuel Macron's remarks during a speech on innovation and 5G, Monday.

The head of state then compared the opponents of this technology to the Amish community, known for leading a simple, peaceful and austere life, and keeping away from progress and influences from the outside world.

"For me, progress is human progress. A less polluted city, the reduction of inequalities ... Technological innovation can be put to the service of progress, but we must not confuse technological innovation and progress ", launches the EELV advisor at the microphone of Europe 1.

"France has not been able to make its own report"

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Yannick Jadot, Michèle Rubirola ... In a column published in the Journal du Dimanche, nearly 70 left-wing elected officials and environmentalists asked the government for a moratorium on the deployment of 5G technology.

A moratorium which, according to Émile Meunier, is supported by a large fringe of society.

"In the polls, half of the French share our convictions on the moratorium on 5G", assures the lawyer.

"This is proof that in public opinion, it goes beyond political divisions".

Recently questioned by Europe 1 on this subject, the Minister for Ecological Transition, Barbara Pompili had affirmed, with a supporting report, that there was no health risk associated with 5G.

But Émile Meunier doubts that, and looks at the said report with a suspicious eye.

"This is not a report, but a meta-analysis," he says.

"This means that France was not able to make its own report and went to read the reports of others and drew conclusions", continues the environmental adviser, adding however that an investigation by the National Agency food, environmental and occupational health safety (ANSES) is in progress.

"We could wait for this authority to submit its report before embarking on technology," suggests Émile Meunier.

Indeed, environmentalists are chasing time.

The ANSES report is scheduled for March, however, for the installation of 5G, the various operators should draw from March.
