CNN reports it citing Karin Wilson, mayor of Fairhope, the hometown of Groom in Alabama.

Groom was 77 years old.

The 1994 film by Zemeckis and with Tom Hanks, based on the novel, won six Oscars and became a cultural phenomenon.
