The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced restrictions on mobility in Madrid but refused to declare a state of alarm for the coronavirus and said that "confinement must be avoided at all costs".

El Pais reports it.

The Spanish capital region restricts entry and exit to 37 health zones, limits meetings to six people, and closes parks.

Hospital tents set up as a precaution

A row of green tents have been set up at the gates of the Gomez Ulla military hospital in Madrid, four months after the creation of similar facilities for the triage of patients affected by Covid-19.

The Spanish Ministry of Defense, which runs the military hospital, said the tents are empty and unused for now, but have been set up as a precaution in the event of a second wave overloading hospitals, while infections in the capital continue to to increase.

The Madrid region has a coronavirus transmission rate six times higher than the national average and the announcement of "drastic measures" to try to counter the spread of the disease is expected.

These could include localized lockdowns or other travel restrictions in the most affected areas, which are generally the poorest and most densely populated.

Spain on Thursday recorded 11 thousand new confirmed cases and 162 deaths from Covid-19, while the country has the heaviest global toll in Europe: over 625 thousand infections and at least 30,400 deaths, according to data released by the Ministry of Health.
