  San Diego Naval Base is the largest naval base of the U.S. military on the west coast, and one-third of the U.S. Navy fleet uses this as their home port.

Its primary task is to be responsible for the logistics of the Pacific Fleet. It also undertakes the task of protecting the west coast of the United States and preventing the enemy from launching attacks from the Pacific Ocean to the United States.

As an important part of it, the Point Loma Naval Base is located in its southwestern part, guarding the "gate" for entry and exit.

  Point Loma Naval Base is located on the north shore of San Diego Bay in the Point Loma District, northwest of San Diego, California. There are as many as 64 military units in the base, with more than 22,000 active military and civilian personnel.

  The Naval Base at Point Loma mainly includes 7 major military commands including the US Navy's Third Fleet Command and the Pacific Ocean Shipping Logistics Command.

These headquarters are basically distributed in the mountainous and coastal areas of the Point Loma Peninsula and surrounding areas, forming a multifunctional and efficient naval business technology center.

  In fact, the base is composed of more than a dozen sub-bases that are geographically separated, mainly including the Point Loma nuclear submarine base, the fuel storage area of ​​the Defense Fuel Supply Station of the Ministry of Defense, the cliff base area, the mountain top base area, and the shore base area. , Bay Area, Third Fleet Command Integrated Base Area, etc.

  Point Loma Naval Base is directly managed by the commander of the US Navy Southwestern Command. Its main task is to provide the most direct daily services for the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet and other military units stationed there, including various logistical support and support services to ensure all The stationed military units can carry out their work efficiently and smoothly.

  One of the sub-bases, the Point Loma Nuclear Submarine Base, is located at a crucial location, and its south is the shipping strait in the San Diego Bay.

This very narrow strait stretches from the entrance of the nuclear submarine base to the No. 24 Street Pier in San Diego Bay. There is no branch water in the entire strait.

There are approximately 9,000 deep-draft ships entering and exiting San Diego Bay through this strait every year.

There is an important choke point at Cape Ballast, near the entrance of the Shipping Channel, which is mainly used to control the transportation of food and fuel.

Cape Ballast is the narrowest part of the shipping strait. After passing through the cape, it enters the warship mooring area of ​​the nuclear submarine base at Point Loma.

  In addition to the above-mentioned military infrastructure, the Point Loma Naval Base also has some areas open to the public, mainly Cabrillo National Park and Rosecrans National Cemetery. These two places can accommodate more than 1.2 million visitors per year on average. .
