17 September 2020Moments of concern in the sea in front of Palermo, where 76 migrants who were aboard the Open Arms ship, along with 272 other travel companions, threw themselves into the sea to swim to the shore.

The patrol boats of the Port Authority and a helicopter of the Guardia di Finanza recovered them and brought them back to the Spanish NGO ship.

The boat awaits instructions from the prefecture and the harbor master's office for docking at the port of Palermo or to tranship migrants.

The Open Arms headed for the Sicilian capital after Malta's negative response to grant shelter from the storm.

On board the Spanish NGO, there are currently 275 people, including many minors, who are now awaiting a possible transfer to a "quarantine ship".

The boat has been located off the coast of the Sicilian capital since last night, with operations that are clearly visible even from the seafront.
