Yesterday, a member of the Islamic Endowments Council in East Jerusalem, Hatem Abdel Qader, confirmed the council’s decision to suspend worshipers from entering the Temple Mount for a period of three weeks to limit the spread of the new Corona virus.

"The council decided to suspend worshipers from entering the mosque, starting in the afternoon of Friday, September 18, for a period of three weeks," Abdel-Qader told «Agence France Presse».

He added that the Islamic Endowments Council, which operates under the umbrella of the Jordanian Ministry of Endowments, took this decision during an "emergency meeting to discuss health conditions, and listened to the reports of Palestinian medical authorities that recommended taking appropriate measures to limit the spread of the virus."

This is the second time that the Temple Mount has been closed since the occupation of the eastern part of the city in 1967. It was closed for the first time last March due to the Corona virus.

The mosque was reopened to worshipers at the end of last May after a closure that lasted for about two months.

Israel counted 166,794 cases of the virus, in addition to 1,147 deaths, including about 1,823 infections and 43 deaths in East Jerusalem, according to the mayor of the city.

In the Palestinian territories, the West Bank recorded about 31 thousand injuries and 227 deaths, in addition to 2,100 injuries in the Gaza Strip, and 15 deaths.

A member of the Endowments Council affirmed that the campus will remain "open to the council’s employees, and the call to prayer will be raised in it, and all prayers will be held."

According to Abdel Qader, this procedure comes “due to the outbreak of the epidemic situation, we ask citizens to understand the provisions of this decision, which aims to preserve their health and preserve the human soul.”
