Quim Torra
digs in.
The president of the Generalitat has wasted this Tuesday the last opportunity to set the elections before tomorrow he goes to the Supreme Court to face his firm disqualification.
The head of the Catalan Executive had a propitious occasion to announce the end of the legislature.
He opened the General Policy Debate in Parliament -the most important session of the year- and therefore had an unbeatable institutional framework to finalize his agonizing mandate.
But, putting the electoral interests of JxCat before the risk that Catalonia will have to face crucial months of the pandemic with an interim government, the
president
He has threatened to lock himself up again.
"I will serve my country until the last consequences", has warned Torra, who already assured weeks ago that he intends to disobey an eventual disqualification of the Supreme Court and that he has already demanded that the separatist forces not invite a replacement if he is stripped of the position ;
which would delay the call for elections until February, since, once Torra is disqualified, a two-month period is opened to elect a new president and continue the legislature.
At the end of this period, the elections are automatically called by law and are held 54 days after that call.
“Tomorrow I would dedicate all my minutes to stopping the coronavirus, but I will not be able to do it because a State installed in revenge wants to disable a
president
.
They want to bring down a president and provoke a period of instability in an entire country in the midst of a pandemic, ”Torra proclaimed to hold Spain responsible for the consequences that its stubborn refusal to leave office may have on Catalonia.
An obstinacy that is not even shared by half of the Government, because ERC had urged the president to take advantage of the General Policy Debate to put an end to the uncertainty that surrounds his disqualification.
Tora met with the entire Executive ten minutes before the session began in Parliament and clarified that in no case was he going to be disqualified before the Supreme Court confirms the sentence.
The chief executive needs to stage an unjust dismissal promoted by an oppressive state and, hence, that he even refuses to agree with the republicans on the steps that will follow to his disqualification.
Torra continues to hide his letters, but his intention to remain as symbolic president for the two months established by law until the automatic call for elections gains strength.
Although it would be
Pere Aragonès
who would temporarily assume the Presidency, Torra intends to relegate him to the role of mere executor of his decisions to deprive him of all media prominence and prevent ERC from achieving an electoral boost by taking advantage of the rise of the current vice president.
Those of
Oriol Junqueras
have few options
to escape this maneuver, since any sign of resistance would be used by Carles Puigdemont to accuse ERC of being an accomplice of the State that has expelled the president, after having already done the same with the «
president
legitimate ”with the application of 155.
