The only party behind all the committee's proposals is the Social Democrats.

The Moderates, together with the Sweden Democrats and the Christian Democrats, have pushed for a much tougher asylum policy, but the Social Democrats have not wanted to agree to demands such as volume targets and strict demands to take part in Swedish welfare.

The negotiations have also led to tensions within the government as the Green Party accused the Social Democrats of wanting an overly tight and inhumane refugee policy.

Tough negotiations await

As the committee is far from agreeing on many points, tough negotiations are expected this autumn between the government and the eight parliamentary parties.

The current, temporary law, expires in June next year.

If no new legislation is in place then the old legislation will continue to apply.
