The Mozambican government condemned the video recording of the execution of a naked Muslim woman by gunmen wearing military uniforms, apparently suspected of belonging to the rebels against the government.

The video, which was posted on social media, shows soldiers in Mozambican army uniforms shouting at a completely naked woman, hitting her with sticks before killing her by bullets at the edge of the road.

"You are the youth," the men shout in Portuguese, referring to an armed group that has rebelled against the government since 2017.

The Mozambican Ministry of Defense condemned the horrific footage, and called for an investigation to verify its authenticity, and said in a statement on Monday that "the defense and security forces renew their opposition to any brutal act that violates human rights."

In May, Amnesty International revealed several videos showing soldiers violently attacking prisoners suspected of having links with Al-Shabaab, and Mozambican security forces accused the Mozambican security forces of practicing torture against suspects in the Cabo Delgado region in the north of the country, where the rebellion is active.

The government rejected the accusations last week, saying the violence was carried out by "militants".

The armed forces are seeking to regain control of Cabo Delgado, where one of Africa's largest LNG projects is located.

And the "hard-line rebels" launched a series of attacks on villages and towns in this region during the past three years, leaving more than 1,500 dead and 250,000 displaced.

On 12 August, militant militants gained control of the strategic port of Mosimboa da Praia.
