• Direct: Last minute of the coronavirus

The Israeli government approved today a total closure of three weeks to stop the second wave of the coronavirus, which has hit the country hard since May and which reached one of the highest morbidity rates in the world in the last week.

As of this Friday, Israelis will not be able to leave more than

500 meters

from their home, non-essential shops will remain closed AND no more than ten people will be able to gather, among other restrictions.

Differences over the imposition of confinement today led to the resignation of Construction and Housing Minister Yakov Litzman from the ultra-Orthodox United Judaism Torah party.

Litzman, one of Benjamin Netanyahu's main allies in his coalition, resigned after warning the prime minister that he would not continue in office if a total closure is decreed from Friday 18, when Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) begins, reported the local daily Haaretz.

Hours before, this ultra-Orthodox leader - controversial for his initial management of the pandemic when he was head of Health - asked the Executive to allow the ceremonies of the upcoming festivities (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur) to be held with wide attendance, very important dates for Judaism according to Army radio.

The confinement "will prevent hundreds of thousands of Jews from all walks of life from praying in synagogues," Litzman denounced in his resignation statement.

According to Haaretz, he acted independently from the rest of his party and did not coordinate his resignation with his fellow ranks, so it remains to be seen if this will have implications for the stability of the government led by Netanyahu.

The Cabinet of Ministers met this morning to decide whether to decree a two-week confinement in the country to help contain the

unstoppable second wave

of COVID-19, after a week of new records of daily infections for several days in a row.

After being approved last Thursday in the coronavirus Cabinet, the ministers have ratified the confinement, which would take effect this coming Friday first thing in the morning.

New restrictions

The announced plan has three phases.

During the first stage, of at least two weeks, the restrictions will be tougher: movement is limited to 500 meters from home,

schools and businesses close

-except essential shops, limitations on jobs are established and virtual employment is returned in as much as possible.

According to the local press, other ministers oppose these drastic measures because of the effects it will have on the already weakened Israeli economy, with a

21% unemployment compared to 3.3% in February

.

The Ministry of Finance estimates that it could lead to economic losses of some

5,000 million euros

.
