Floods in Niger: how food aid distribution is organized in Niamey

It is one of the countries most affected by flooding in the Sahel, with more than 350,000 victims and dozens of deaths.

Most of these victims of the banks of the Niger River are resettled in schools.

Humanitarian organizations and the municipality of Niamey are organizing to come to their aid.

We are in one of the 14 accommodation centers in Niamey commune 4, 400 affected families are resettled in a school.

The mayor of the commune Ali Sidikou supervises the distribution of mosquito nets: “ 

Each household must have the number of mosquito nets it takes to protect itself against possible diseases.

 "

We are scrambling to register and benefit from first aid.

The stocks are visible in the schoolyard.

“ 

Since yesterday,”

explains the mayor, “

we started the distribution with a 50 kilogram bag of rice accompanied by cash to pay for the condiments, and salt and oil.

 "

Support for 400 families

Their baby on their backs, Ramotleï and Sukéna are on the front line: “ 

We brought the mosquito nets with the soap.

Like the others said, we'll wait.

We need tarpaulins, we need something to eat too.

Now we need food because we need to prepare food.

 "

Health brigades are also pre-positioned in each center under the control of the chief medical officer Moumouni Adamo: “ 

There are 400 families.

This team will take care of these 400 families, in terms of health.

 "

This distribution of food and other packages takes place under the watchful eye of the village chief.
