Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has called for a new discussion on the country's position regarding the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, the Danish TV and Radio Corporation DR reported.

In her opinion, the reason for a new discussion is the situation with Alexei Navalny.

“I have been against Nord Stream 2 throughout the entire time.

I believe that we should not become dependent on Russian gas.

It would be nice if we could start a new discussion on this issue, "RIA Novosti quoted Frederiksen as saying.

As a reminder, Nord Stream 2 is a two-strand gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters.

meters of gas per year passing from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea through the territorial waters and exclusive economic zones of five countries.

As of early August, the Danish Energy Agency had no objection to the construction of the gas pipeline.

Denmark was the last country to give permission for the construction of Nord Stream 2.

Then Copenhagen imposed a ban on the laying of a line with the use of anchor ships due to the danger of touching unexploded ordnance during the Second World War, but later it became known that the route of the pipeline construction passes outside the zones where the use of ships of this type is dangerous.

The incident with Alexei Navalny took place on August 20, 2020.

The blogger was on a plane en route from Tomsk to Moscow when he became ill.

The liner urgently landed in Omsk, after which Navalny, who was unconscious, was hospitalized.

The blogger's relatives insisted on his transfer to a German clinic, but Navalny's condition at that time did not allow him to be transported.

After Russian doctors stabilized Navalny, he was transported to the Charite clinic in Berlin.

Subsequently, the German side stated that the Russian was allegedly poisoned with a substance from the Novichok group.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas did not rule out the suspension of the Nord Stream 2 project as a reaction to the situation with Alexei Navalny.

At the same time, a number of German politicians previously called calls to stop the construction of the highway a mistake.

In turn, the German MP from the Alternative for Germany party Waldemar Gerdt named those who want to “punish” Russia for Nord Stream 2.

“The CDU, the ruling party, was fully committed to shutting down Nord Stream 2.

Like, we need to punish Russia, we need to give her the understanding that we do not tolerate this - something, even it is not clear what.

It is very obediently fulfilling the version of its master, the United States, ”he said.

At the same time, the deputy added that other political forces adhered to different positions.

For example, his party believes that this situation is “just a fictitious excuse,” while the Social Democrats believe that it is necessary to wait for the results of an investigation into what happened.

According to Gerdt, the behavior of the ruling party shows the lack of sovereignty in Germany and pushes for a decision that infringes upon "the interests of his own country and his people."

First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov believes that the statement of the Danish Prime Minister should be interpreted as an attempt to demonstrate solidarity with those countries that opposed Nord Stream 2.

“We remember that Denmark for a long time did not agree on the route that passed through its territorial waters.

I think that little depends on her performance and Nord Stream 2 will be completed.

First of all, because the Germans are interested in him, who are very pragmatic about such issues, ”the senator said in an interview with RT.

He recalled that the pressure on the European states in the Nord Stream 2 issues is exerted by the US representatives, who have repeatedly condemned the implementation of the project.

"The Americans are putting pressure on everyone to try to squeeze Russia out of the European market through unfair competition," Dzhabarov noted.

According to Igor Yushkov, an expert at the Financial University under the Russian government, a leading analyst at the National Energy Security Fund, the traditional opponents of Nord Stream 2 have a "second wind."

“They have already lost hope that the Europeans themselves will abandon this project, and now there is a very good reason to raise this topic,” the expert said.

As Yushkov noted, Washington is trying to make sure that the highway is not completed at all.

“Now, thanks to the situation with Navalny, there is a reason to return to the discussion that it is possible to introduce European sanctions, and no one will finish building anything at all.

There would be no such reason, there would be something else, ”the analyst believes.
