Conor McGregor, the Irish star of MMA, mixed martial arts, was taken into custody in Corsica, suspected of attempted sexual assault and sexual exhibition, we learned Saturday from the Bastia prosecutor's office.
"Following a complaint filed on September 10 denouncing facts likely to be qualified as attempted sexual assault and sexual exhibition, Mr. Conor Anthony Mac Gregor was the subject of a hearing by the services gendarmerie, under the police custody regime, "writes the prosecution in a statement sent to AFP.
Conor McGregor is 32 years old.
No other details were given on the charges against him.
Figurehead of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the main organizer of MMA fights, Conor McGregor is one of the most popular and highest paid fighters in the history of the sport which combines several martial arts and allows kicking , fist, knee and elbow, as well as knocking on the ground, strangling and keys inside a closed enclosure, the octagon.
McGregor held the UFC featherweight title from 2015 to 2016 and lightweight from 2016 to 2018. But it was while participating in a controversial boxing fight against American legend Floyd Mayweather, in August 2017 in Las Vegas, that he rose to worldwide notoriety and wealth despite his defeat.
In June 2020, he announced his retirement for the third time, having twice returned to the octagons.
