Four students at the University of Dubai developed a smart method for controlling smart and electronic devices at home, and applied it to the "smart refrigerator", whereby its contents can be identified using the "Alexa" voice assistant technology, with the aim of helping the "blind" people of determination use these devices.

The student Ghaith Bitar told «Emirates Today», that «innovation relied on adding a feature to control the products kept in the refrigerator, to know the quantities of these products, through a code reader that is provided with an Alexa device, which is a voice assistant to control smart and electronic devices at home.

He stated that he managed with his colleagues Aisha Ahmed, Maryam Muhammad and Asma Al-Hashemi to complete the project within four months, and they conducted experiments on it that resulted in good results, indicating that they are in the stage of obtaining a patent.

The team used radio frequency identification reader technology to build their database as well as to read the names and items available in the refrigerator, and they created a digital website and application to track the requests made by users through voice commands and create automatic emails.

For his part, the University President, Dr. Issa Al-Bastaki, said that the university’s main goal is to prepare the future generation for their professional lives and provide them with the necessary skills to meet the needs and requirements of the market, pointing out that the university’s faculty members focus on teaching students how to market their ideas, not just completing their projects or assignments.
