The Genome Center at Al Jalila Children's Specialty Hospital in Dubai is working on forming a genetic database that will help diagnose genetic diseases quickly and accurately, and facilitate treatment.

The director of the center, Professor Ahmed Aboution, said that Al-Qaeda is one of the first initiatives specialized in this field in the region, explaining that the project monitors the genetic variables in society and their relationship to genetic diseases.

He added that the center dealt with about 290 patients with hereditary or suspected diseases, while the target number exceeded 1,000 patients.

He emphasized that the genetic database speeds up the diagnosis by 30% compared to the genetic graphical statistics found in America and Europe, and that it can be used in the future to conduct genetic testing for those intending to marry, to ensure that they are free of any diseases or genetic mutations that their children may inherit.

He pointed out that the total number of diseases and genetic mutations that were detected in the UAE exceeds 300, according to the Arab Center for Genetic Studies in Dubai, stressing that the database will facilitate determining the scope of the examination and reaching the result quickly and accurately.

He added that the most common genetic diseases in the country are thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, and spinal muscular atrophy.
