  • Coronavirus. Teachers' unions call a strike only in Madrid to boycott the start of the school year

  • Analysis. Obstacles to going back to school: teachers and principals warn that the measures "are not realistic"

After the uncertainty of the first week of the 'back to school' in much of the national territory, the autonomies are now preparing to face various teacher strikes that could last for even weeks and that begin this Thursday in Madrid, according to the convocation of CNT.

The strike registered by this union is the longest to date: until September 30.

20 days in which it will coincide with the strikes raised by other groups, such as CC.OO., UGT, CGT and STEM, which keep the notice for September 22 and 23.

The reason for the strike coincides in practically all union calls: the lack of personnel to start classes ensuring security measures against the coronavirus and the breach, in his opinion, of the regional government's commitment to guarantee a 'return to school' with guarantees.

The CNT strike is aimed at all non-university teachers dependent on the Ministry of Education of the Community of Madrid, and establishes the presence of the director and the head of studies at the center as minimum services.

A control assistant must also be present for each shift, and 50% of the cleaning staff in those centers whose provision depends on the Community of Madrid.

Other hot spots

The call for a strike, which was initially limited only to the capital, has spread to other regions.

Thus, as of today, various calls have started in multiple autonomies that will see their return to the classroom altered.

This is the case, for example, of Galicia.

The unions CIG, CC.OO., STEG and CSIF have taken advantage of the start of the course this Thursday to call for work stoppages among teachers.

They demand that the Xunta allocate more funds for the hiring of personnel, the reduction of ratios and the compensation of extraordinary expenses.

Student unions and parent groups support the call and invite not taking their children to school.

In the Balearic Islands, the Balearic Workers 'Union (UOB) and the Workers' Trade Union (USO) have called not to attend class as of Monday, considering that the minimum requirements to start the course with protection are not met.

As a minimum service, one teacher is established for every three or four courses, depending on the educational stage.

At the moment, no more unions have joined the call.

Meanwhile, in Murcia they will go on strike on September 23, as reported by CC.OO.

and STERM.

Among their claims is an increase in negotiations between the regional government and the educational community.

They invite both students and teachers not to go to classrooms as they consider the current start-of-course model "unsustainable".

In the Basque Country, the newly formed regional executive has found in the call for a strike for next day 15 one of its first major obstacles.

As admitted this week by Vice Lehendakari

Josu Erkoreka

, the new Minister of Education,

Jokin Bildarratz

, is "working hard" to try to reach agreements with all parts of the Basque educational system and avoid stoppages in this return to the classroom.
