Microsoft Corp has warned one of the top companies advising Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden that he had been the target of suspected Russian-backed hackers, according to three separate sources on the matter.

The hacking attempts took place over the past two months and targeted the staff of Washington-based SKDKnickerbocker, a political communications firm that works with Biden and other prominent Democrats.

A person familiar with SKDK's strategy in the face of hacking attempts stated that such attempts

failed to access the company's networks.

"They are well defended, so there has been no gap," this person said.

SKDK Vice President Hilary Rosen declined to comment while a Biden spokesperson did not respond to a request for a response from Reuters.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the accusations as "nonsense".

Moscow has repeatedly denied the use of hackers to try to interfere in the elections of other countries.

The hacking attempts at SKDK come as US intelligence agencies have drawn attention to possible attempts by foreign governments to interfere in the November presidential elections.

Investigations by former special counsel Robert Mueller and the Senate intelligence committee concluded that Russia attempted to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, and Mueller warned that it was again meddling in the current campaign.

It is unclear if Biden was the target of the attacks or if the hackers were trying to access information about other customers. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the accusations as "nonsense."

SKDK CEO Anita Dunn was the White House communication director during Barack Obama's presidency and is an advisor on Biden's current campaign.

Microsoft identified hackers linked to the Russian government as likely culprits.

The attacks included phishing, a method that aims to trick users into revealing their passwords.

The Microsoft spokesman declined to comment.

SKDK is closely linked to the Democratic Party, for which it has served six presidential campaigns and numerous congressional elections.
