In a first letter, a coalition of 165 human rights groups called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
to deprive Beijing of the 2022 Winter Olympics
, while, in another letter, more than 300 NGOs urged the UN to investigate human rights violations in China.
These calls come as criticism of China has increased, especially over the situation in Hong Kong and
the issue of Uyghurs in the Xinjiang region
.
But also on the situation in the China Sea, political prisoners, arbitrary arrests ... Stop impunity, insists Antoine Madelin, who coordinates advocacy at the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH).
"
The Chinese authorities have obtained the silence of the entire international community on the atrocities committed in the country," he
denounces at the microphone of
Vincent Souriau
.
Abuses in Xinjiang, for example, which have been added to those previously in Tibet, the repression of demonstrations in Hong Kong, the closure of the democratic space in Hong Kong in recent months, have only had the impact of extremely limited measures.
There is no action from the internaitonal community behind it.
We ask that the international community, in the light of all these reports, decide to launch a major commission of inquiry into these crimes.
As there were cases of crimes committed in Syria, for example, or during the war in Yemen, we are asking that there be an intergovernmental decision to set up this body.
