September 10, 2020The European Commission has given the UK until the end of the month to withdraw a bill that calls into question some Brexit commitments, which has "seriously undermined" mutual trust, stressing that the EU "would not hesitate. to take legal action ".

The statement follows an emergency meeting in London between British Minister Michael Gove and European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic, who "called on the British government to remove these measures from the bill as soon as possible and, in any case, by the end of the month ", according to a statement from the European executive.

GB defends law, sovereign national parliament

The British government defends the post-Brexit bill that the EU orders it to withdraw by the end of the month, under penalty of a judicial appeal, arguing that Parliament "is sovereign in matters of national law" and that "it will not act unconstitutional" approving a text that reviews some of the commitments made under the divorce agreement signed with the EU, in particular on the Irish protocol.

In a note released after the meeting between Minister Michael Gove and Vice President of the European Commission Maros Sefcovic, London also claims a right of "precedence" of national legislation "on the Withdrawal Agreement".
