ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting South China Sea issue of US-China conflict urges self-restraint in joint statement September 11, 7:47

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations issued a joint statement at the Foreign Ministers' Meeting held on the 9th, urging restraint on actions that raise tensions on the issue of the South China Sea, where the conflict between the United States and China is deepening.

At this conference, which was held in the form of a video conference, the issue of the South China Sea, in which some ASEAN member countries and China vie for sovereignty, became one of the main agenda items.

Conflicts are deepening over the South China Sea, with China claiming interests in almost the entire area, while the United States has pointed out that it is "totally illegal" and the military activities of both countries have become active.

A joint statement released on the night of the 10th pointed out that the current situation in the South China Sea was "concerned by several foreign ministers over landfills, activities and serious cases that have increased tensions in the region."

He emphasized, "We reaffirmed that actions that could complicate and exacerbate conflict and affect peace and stability need to be restrained."

The joint statement appears to have urged both countries to restrain themselves with China and the United States in mind, while avoiding naming, reflecting the concerns of ASEAN member states over the conflict between the United States and China.
