  • In Rennes, wearing a mask becomes compulsory almost everywhere from Thursday.

  • The number of positive cases has exploded in recent days and the coronavirus is hitting young people more and more.

  • The department of Ille-et-Vilaine will soon pass into the red zone due to the active circulation of the virus.

Rennes was for the time being relatively spared by the coronavirus epidemic.

But since the start of the school year, the counters are going wild.

While the incidence rate was only 55 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Friday in the metropolis, it has suddenly jumped to 93 cases in recent hours, especially among the young population.

The test positivity rate also climbed to 6%, up from around 3% last week.

Faced with this outbreak of the epidemic, deemed "worrying" by the prefect, the authorities have decided to strengthen health measures in an attempt to curb the circulation of the virus.

They have thus just activated level 2 of the prevention plan.

"The level of vigilance goes up a notch but economic, social and educational life must of course continue," said Michèle Kirry, the Prefect of Ille-et-Vilaine this Wednesday noon.

The municipalities of the metropolis also concerned

As a result of this worsening of the situation, the wearing of a mask will now be compulsory from this Thursday and until September 30 everywhere in the city, with the exception of a few sparsely populated areas such as Gayeulles or Prévalaye.

Until now, only the hypercentre as well as a few sectors close to the city center were affected by this prefectural decree, which entered into force on August 8.

This extension of the obligation to wear a mask also concerns neighborhoods in neighboring municipalities located inside the bypass, such as Cesson-Sévigné, Chantepie or Saint-Grégoire.

In the coming days, wearing a mask will also become compulsory in towns and in dense areas of 42 other towns in the metropolis.

This measure will not apply, however, for cyclists and joggers, as was already the case in the city center of Rennes.

Ille-et-Vilaine will go into the red

The activity of night bars will also be impacted in the Breton capital since they will now have to close the curtain at 1am instead of 3am currently.

Other bars and restaurants will be asked to keep a register to facilitate the search for contact cases.

"We are also going to encourage companies to promote teleworking when the activity allows it", underlined the mayor of Rennes Nathalie Appéré.

With these bad figures from Rennes, the department of Ille-et-Vilaine, where the incidence rate is 68 cases and the positivity rate of 5.4%, "should very probably join the cohort of departments in the red zone in the next few days ”, specified the prefect.

There are now thirty of them and Ille-et-Vilaine will therefore be the first Breton department to turn red.
