October 24, 2016Three containers that housed the staff offices for the asylum service on the island of Lesbos, Greece, were set on fire and "almost destroyed" this morning in Moria during a protest by a group of about 70 migrants.

The people who worked inside - according to police sources - managed to escape and no victims were reported.

The incidents, which lasted about an hour, began when migrants "mostly Pakistanis and Bangladeshis threw stones at the policemen and set fire to blankets, then throwing them into containers," the source explained.

The police arrested a dozen migrants.

As in other refugee camps, protest actions by migrants are also frequent in Moria, where over 5,000 migrants are crammed for 3,500 places.

Currently there are about 15,000 migrants in total for 8,000 places available in the registration centers on the Greek islands.

Most of them will have to be sent back to Turkey under the agreement signed on 18 March with the European Union.

Overall in Greece, between the mainland and the islands, there are about 65,890 refugees and migrants who were stranded after the closure of the European borders at the beginning of the year.
