Nineteen fully automated food stores have opened in Sweden since early 2019. An initiative by Swedish start-up Lifvs, which has mainly established itself in villages where the supermarket or local grocery store had closed, reports

.
With the disappearance of local businesses in the countryside, residents have to travel longer distances to shop and some even decide to move to the city.
“In a small village, if you don't want everyone to go, that's the future,” explains the mayor of Eket (Sweden), a small town where a Lifvs supermarket has been established.

Log in and pay with a mobile app
The start-up was spoiled for choice for the location of its mini-supermarkets: Sweden had less than 3,500 supermarkets in 2010, compared to 8,500 in 1985. Eket residents can now get supplies in the Lifvs store, installed in a 22 m² container and open 24 hours a day. The store's format allows it to be easily moved from one municipality to another if the turnover is not satisfactory.
Sweden has shops with no shopkeepers in remote areas.
Instead, a mobile app opens the shop door & allows customers to scan products, paying online.
The shop is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The fully automated mini-market is made up of conventional or refrigerated departments and customers shop there under the watchful eye of a CCTV camera.
Access, product selection and payment are made through a mobile app.
Only putting some 500 items on the shelves and cleaning the premises require human intervention.
A single employee can thus run four or five convenience stores.
