The Swedish Transport Administration's measurements of travel on our roads show that traffic has increased again compared with the beginning of April.

However, the figures are still around five percent lower than the corresponding period last year.

- It is a pretty big effect.

The traffic does not usually vary that much without reason, says Jonas Eliasson, accessibility director at the Swedish Transport Administration.

During the spring, the decline nationally has been as large as 30 percent.

At the measuring station in Norsholm, between Norrköping and Linköping, the decline in traffic on the E4 was even more than 40 percent a week in early April.

Why the numbers look the way they do, research can not answer yet.

Jonas Eliasson believes, however, that the large decline in April largely consisted of travel that could be postponed.

For example, there may have been trips to buy rare goods or trips to visit relatives and friends.

Those trips resume after a while and a reasonable assumption, according to Eilasson, is that the lasting decline is due to the fact that many are still working from home.

Considering how many people have still not resumed work commuting, Eliasson is even a little surprised that the decline in traffic remains at five percent.

Jonas Eliasson believes that our commuting habits have changed.

Many have discovered that travel to conferences and physical meetings can often be replaced with digital meetings.
