Basque Country: Former ETA member Igor González Sola appears dead in his Martutene cell
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, regretted this Tuesday in the Senate plenary session the death last week of ETA prisoner
Igor González Sola
who, according to the investigations, committed suicide in his cell in the
San Sebastian prison of Martutene
.
In response to the EH-Bildu senator
Gorka Elejabarrieta
, Sánchez has defended the action of the prison authorities in this case and recalled that the suicide rate in Spanish prisons is
6.4 cases per 10,000 inmates compared to 7.2 of the whole of the EU
.
However, Sánchez has acknowledged that any rate "above zero" is not acceptable and therefore has advocated that this
"unfortunate event"
serves to improve the suicide prevention protocol applied by Penitentiary Institutions.

He has also defended the
individualized treatment
applied to the inmates of the terrorist gang, as was the case of Igor González, transferred to Martutene taking into account his personal and prison circumstances.
In his speech, the EH-Bildu spokesman had alerted Sánchez that
without solving "the problem of the prisoners" it is impossible to "advance in peace"
in the Basque Country.
