  • The municipalities of Lyon and Villeurbanne will conduct a new pedestrian experiment on September 26 and 27.

  • All the boroughs will be affected this time.

  • Cars cannot park on the surface within the defined perimeters.

"The objective is to appease the city and give public space back to citizens".

Tuesday the EELV mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet announced that a new pedestrian experiment will be held in Lyon and Villeurbanne on September 26 and 27.

Pedestrianization will be "more massive" than in previous operations, implemented from September to November 2019, and will concern all the city's districts, without exception.

Several perimeters have been defined: the Lyon peninsula as a whole (from Place Carnot to Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse) but also different sectors of each arrondissement (see box).

Free parking outside the center

For the first time, residents' cars will not be allowed to park on the surface in the areas concerned.

A measure that risks making people cringe.

Residents will, in fact, be forced to park in underground car parks in the city or even outside the city center.

“There will be financial incentives”, promises Bruno Bernard, the president of the metropolis of Lyon.

Off-center car parks such as those in the Halle Tony Garnier, the Cité internationale or the Marché Gare will therefore be free.

“For the rest, we will offer a package of 10 euros for the weekend in the LPA car parks,” he continues.

If the Greens have never hidden from giving less space to the car in the streets of Lyon, the measure could point to more radical decisions.

Towards a definitive pedestrianization of certain streets

“This experimentation should foreshadow the Lyon of tomorrow, namely a more relaxed city,” replied Grégory Doucet.

And to add, without confirming that the vehicles could be driven out of the center in the long term: “We are considering a definitive pedestrianization of certain places but we will take the time to carry out a real evaluation.

Because we want it to be beneficial for all ”.

Starting with the traders, very critical at the end of the first experiences.

"All the studies show that pedestrianization is favorable to local shops", reassures Camille Augey, Lyon assistant in charge of employment and the sustainable and local economy.

The restitution of the experiments carried out last fall had revealed a contrasting assessment with a test deemed unsatisfactory during the week, unlike the weekend.

But the possibility of retrying the experiment during the week is not on the agenda.

"It's a bit early to say it and the weekend seemed to us a more appropriate period", answers Grégory Doucet by way of conclusion.
