08 September 2020 "Literacy is an engine of justice and development".

This was underlined by the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, in a statement on the occasion of International Literacy Day.

"The crisis we are experiencing, notes the President of the Republic - requires attention to be paid to the gap in knowledge and opportunities, which risks worsening precisely because of the impact of the global pandemic on education systems and socio-economic dynamics".

Mattarella stressed that the issue of the gap does not concern "only the school, nor only the young people. Literacy is a challenge that engages the various communities towards all generations. There is no fullness in freedom and in the exercise of rights without the ability to read, write, do calculations ".

According to the Head of State, "the closure of schools and, in countries where it was possible, the use of information technology for distance learning, have affected learning and training programs. Despite great difficulties, and with the teachers' competition, the periods of forced stay at home were for many students a reason for accelerating the use of digital tools. International Day 2020 can represent an opportunity to reflect on the use of innovative teaching methodologies and to support educators and students in learning processes. At the same time, however - Mattarella again points out - the pandemic has widened the social and digital divide in many contexts, underlining the difficulties of the most vulnerable ".
