The Norrbotten Region has carried out an analysis that shows that the surplus in electricity production will shrink worryingly.

Representatives of municipalities, regions and the county administrative board in Norrbotten believe that Norrland can no longer be a place where you can send very large amounts of electricity to southern Sweden without hindrance.

- We do not say that all electricity should stay here, but we must consider our own needs.

A single project in Norrbotten may require more effect than the whole of Greater Stockholm, says regional councilor Nils-Olov Lindfors (C).

The basic industry is changing

The reason is that the basic industry in the north is switching to fossil-free mining and steel production, which in turn requires large amounts of electricity.

- It will take a lot of electricity to produce hydrogen, which is then used in the basic industry, Lindfors says.

Surplus is consumed at home

The analysis, which includes the county and northern Västerbotten, states that the rest of Sweden cannot count on it being possible to transfer more electricity from north to south.

Electricity-intensive investments made in neighboring counties will consume much of the surplus that exists today.

- If you expand the main network, there must also be a production, something to deliver in the expanded network, says Nils-Olov Lindfors (C), and continues:

 - We have a surplus of electricity in Norrbotten.

Therefore, we think that electricity-intensive industry should be located in places where electricity is available and produced.
