Meeting in Niamey, Niger, West African leaders decided, Monday, September 7, to give the military junta in power in Mali until September 15 to appoint a president and a transitional prime minister.

In a press release read at the end of their summit, the heads of state of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) specified that this president and this prime minister must be civilians.

To see >> West Africa: beware of danger?

Anxious to maintain the pressure on the soldiers who overthrew President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta on August 18, ECOWAS did not lift the sanctions taken against Mali after the coup d'état: closure of borders, and embargo on financial exchanges and commercial.

They nevertheless welcomed the measures taken by the junta over the past week, in order to open a consultation with political parties and representatives of civil society on the subject of the transition period.

The ECOWAS demands the rapid reestablishment of a civilian regime in Mali and the organization of elections within one year, a calendar on which the junta meets in a National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP) did not engage.
