Highlights, new measures, new reports: an update on the latest developments in the Covid-19 pandemic around the world.

- India, second most affected country in the world -

With 4.2 million infections, India became the second country in the world on Monday after the United States (6.25 million cases) with the highest number of Covid-19 cases, overtaking Brazil (4 ,12 millions).

For deaths, it arrives, with 71,642 dead, behind the United States (188,941) and Brazil (126,650) among the three countries most bereaved in the world by the virus.

This has not prevented the country from reopening, with strict health precautions, the metro stationary for almost six months in its major cities, including the capital New Delhi.

- Nearly 890,000 dead -

The pandemic has killed at least 889,498 people around the world since the end of December, according to a report compiled by AFP from official sources Monday at 11:00 GMT.

The countries that have recorded the most new deaths in their latest reports are Ecuador with 3,800 new deaths, India (1,016) and Brazil (447).

Europe is also facing an outbreak of Covid-19, particularly in the United Kingdom, France and Spain.

- Israel: return to partial containment -

The country, which passed the 1,000 dead mark this weekend, approved on Sunday "a night closure plan" in around 40 cities with the highest infection rate and the closure of most of their schools, as well as a limitation of gatherings.

After having brought the epidemic under control in the spring, Israel has been the fifth country in the world for two weeks in the number of cases of infection per capita, according to AFP data.

Protesters point to the Netanyahu government, calling into question too rapid deconfinement coupled with weak aid measures for the most affected, pushed to a precipitous return to work.

- Casablanca: schools closed for the start of the school year -

Casablanca, where 42% of the 2,234 new cases of Sunday were identified, closed all its schools Monday, the day of return.

The authorities attribute this outbreak of cases over the past few weeks to the indiscipline of a population that does not respect barrier gestures.

The economic capital of the country has also blocked all exits from the metropolis and imposes exceptional authorizations for two weeks to enter and leave the city.

- France: the "quatorzaine" in question -

The French government plans to reduce the period of isolation of patients and contact cases.

The Minister of Health Olivier Véran believes that "this famous fortnight (...) is undoubtedly too long".

The issue should be addressed at the next Defense Council.

- The Olympics at all costs -

The Tokyo Olympics, postponed this summer, will begin on July 23 of next year ", pledged John Coates, vice-president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

"With or without" the Covid-19, the Tokyo Games will take place.

"It will be the Games that have defeated the Covid, the light at the end of the tunnel," he said.

- Emirates reimburses its customers -

Emirates, the Middle East's largest airline, has reimbursed customers $ 1.4 billion following flight cancellations due to Covid-19.

The company, which employed some 60,000 people, including 4,300 pilots, before the pandemic, announced a series of job cuts, without specifying the number.

It hopes to resume all of its flights by summer 2021.
