The protest action started on Sunday afternoon, with the participants intending to come close to the presidential residence, the Palace of Independence, to demand the resignation of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

The road to the demonstrators was blocked by a cordon of security officials with special equipment of the police and internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

It was reported that pepper gas was sprayed near the riot police cordon around the Palace of Independence in Minsk.

The press secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus Olga Chemodanova said that hundreds of people were detained throughout the country at protests.
