Around 200 people have defied both the ban on crowds and the demand for masks to express their dissatisfaction in Melbourne.

"Sunshine, fresh air and social contacts are crucial for our good health," reads one of the messages on the posters seen by the crowds.

Police presence has been high and at least 15 people have been arrested, according to police in the state of Victoria.

Around 160 people have been fined, writes Herald Sun.

"Completely selfish"

According to The Guardian, riot police have been seen surrounding small groups of protesters and then arresting them one by one, and photos show how police wrestle protesters on the ground.

- It's not safe, it's not smart and it's not legal.

In fact, it is completely selfish to be out protesting, says Daniel Andrews, Prime Minister of the state of Victoria, during a press conference.

A state of emergency has been declared in Victoria until September 13 and residents have been living under severe restrictions for several weeks now.

Among other things, there is a night curfew, a requirement for a face mask and a ban on activities for all companies that are not considered to be important to society.

Protests in several places

On Sunday, Daniel Andrews is expected to present gradual easing of restrictions, as the number of new cases has begun to decline in the state.

Victoria accounts for just over 75 percent of the total of 26,207 confirmed cases of covid-19 in the country, which has more than tripled in recent months.

On Saturday, the state reported 76 new cases, compared to over 700 new cases daily in July.

Minor protests are also taking place in Brisbane, Sydney and Byron Bay.
