Five young detainees from Baumettes were sentenced Thursday to terms ranging from 14 to 20 years in prison for the lynching of a fellow inmate, caught in an avalanche of beatings in December 2017 in a walkway in Marseille prison.

The Assize Court of Bouches-du-Rhône upheld the qualification of murder while the defense contested the homicidal intention wishing for a disqualification in willful violence resulting in death without intention to give it.

Hit for 80 seconds

On December 16, 2017, Ramses Aly el Sayed, 20, was struck, notably in the head, in the Men district for 80 seconds to the point of falling into a coma and dying in hospital almost two months later, the February 7.

The most heavily convicted, Ameur Benkrama, 22, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

He is accused of having delivered the first punch that made the victim fall to the ground and gave the last kick in the head.

Jumps with both feet on the face

The images recorded by the prison cameras show him leaning on the shoulders of two others in order to jump with both feet on the face of Ramses Aly el Sayed.

Hasni Medjmedj, 21, was sentenced to eighteen years in prison for having kicked twenty-five.

Fethi Belhadj, 22, seventeen years in prison for having struck a dozen violent crutches.

The last two defendants Akim Ali Cherif, 26, and Djedid Ali, 23, were sentenced to fourteen years in prison.
