At the end of March, Fonus and other funeral homes launched the opportunity for customers to send funerals online so that as many people as possible can participate.

Between April and May, Fonus conducted about 90 live funerals and since then the popularity has only increased and today around half of all funeral homes in Sweden offer the service.

Filming a funeral and then broadcasting it online only a few years ago might have sounded a bit odd.

But today it is different.

- It is here to stay, says Frida Terling at Lova Begravning.

According to Frida Terling, at least 10 percent of their customers are interested in the service, which means that people who cannot or do not want to go to church can still attend the funeral.

For many, it is something completely new, but the service has been around for a long time with many funeral contractors.

It has above all been a service to people with many relatives and friends abroad.

- It was used previously in rare cases.

But when corona came, we developed the service quickly, says Dennis Rydergren at Lavendla Begravning.

"Means a lot to people"

SVT has spoken to three different funeral homes, all of which offer live funerals throughout the country, and all testify to a great deal of interest.

They also agree that digital funerals are something that is here to stay, even after the pandemic has ended.

- Before April 16, there was hardly any at all.

Now we are talking about several hundred a month across the country.

It has meant an enormous amount to people, says Ulf Lerneus, union director at the trade association Sveriges Begravningsbyråers Förbund.

The union also does not see any slowdown in demand as the corona pandemic in Sweden has eased, on the contrary - it continues to increase.

- The popularity has continued.

If there is one thing we will have left when the pandemic is over, it is definitely the live broadcasts, says Ulf Lerneus.
