The Associated Press reported that one of the 23 crew members on the ship died, one was injured, and the rest were rescued.

On September 3, local time, a ship full of 270,000 tons of crude oil caught fire off the east coast of Sri Lanka.

  According to previous reports, the "New Diamond" tanker was loaded with 270,000 tons of oil, equivalent to about 2 million barrels of oil, and departed from Ahmadi Port in Kuwait for Paradip Port in India.

  The Associated Press stated that on the 3rd local time, a fire broke out on the tanker, causing one person to be injured and one person missing.

On the morning of September 4, local time, the missing crew member was confirmed to have died in the accident.

  As of the morning of the 4th, Sri Lanka, India and other forces continued to take measures to try to completely extinguish the fire on the tanker.

According to reports, officials have warned that if an oil spill occurs from a ship, it may cause huge damage to the environment on the coast of Sri Lanka.

  At present, the fire has not spread to the ship’s oil storage area, and no reports of oil spills have been received.

  According to a report by Al Jazeera, the "New Diamond" is a super-large crude oil carrier chartered by Indian Petroleum Corporation. The ship is flagged with Panamanian flag. Of the 23 crew members, 18 are from the Philippines and 5 are from Greece.

  According to the Indian Coast Guard, after the Sri Lankan Navy sought assistance, the Indian side has sent three ships and one Dornier aircraft to the tanker’s sea area to participate in rescue operations.

  The Sri Lankan media "News1st" quoted the Sri Lankan navy spokesperson as saying that the captain of the tanker and others had been rescued.

The military is preparing to take them to the coast.

  Two Russian ships originally docked at Hambantota Port also participated in rescue work in the sea area after obtaining permission.
