Authorities said police were in the south-eastern part of the city shortly after 4:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. GMT) to investigate reports of "gunmen in a vehicle."

"When they approached the vehicle, some people fled on foot and a policeman fired his gun," killing one person, US Capitol Police Chief Peter Newsham said in a statement. press conference.

The victim is "a young African-American," Trayon White, a local politician, told the media, calling for the images captured by police cameras to be broadcast.

The case comes after months of protests against police brutality across the United States, and just two days after Los Angeles police shot dead an African-American who was riding a bicycle.
