The historic protests against racism and police brutality yesterday added a new victim to their complaints.

An 18-year-old black man was shot and killed by police in Washington DC on Wednesday.

According to the authorities' account, a patrol was in the southeastern part of the city shortly after 4:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. GMT) to investigate a complaint that warned of "armed men in a vehicle."

"When they approached the car, some people fled on foot and a policeman opened fire," said the police chief of the US capital, Peter Newsham, at a press conference.

The victim, whose death was certified after his transfer to the hospital, is "a young African-American," Trayon White, a local councilor, told the media, requesting the release of the images captured by the police cameras.

"We believe the subject had a weapon at the time," he said.

Two weapons were found at the scene.

"

, don't let the media cover this up," urged the local representative of the Black Lives Matter movement, calling for a demonstration.

Markus Batchelor explained that the victim was 18 years old: "It's tragic."

The case comes after months of nationwide protests against racism and police brutality, and just two days after police officers in Los Angeles shot dead

, a 29-year-old African-American who was riding his bicycle when officers tried to stop him for an alleged traffic violation.

On Wednesday, the family of
