The police in Region North are now collecting the old unsolved murder cases for investigation in Västerbotten.

Six people in Umeå and Skellefteå will work with the cases.

- It's a lot about monitoring and following what is happening with technology and other matters.

We inventory the cases and sometimes we hold an interrogation and send in DNA traces again, says the coordinator of the Cold Case group Mattias Lundmark.

More and more cold cases

In northern Sweden, there are 19 unsolved murder cases that are counted as cold cases.

There, the police have exhausted all available means to solve the crimes, without success.

- The cold cases in Sweden are becoming more and more.

Unsolved murders are the most serious crimes we have and we do not want murderers on our streets.

Hope for the genealogy method

Around the country, the police are now putting their hopes in the new method that led to the double killer being found in Linköping.

A crime that was unsolved for sixteen years.

It is about DNA genealogy as a method of solving serious crimes.

- I see it as a tool to solve murders and it bodes well for the future.

There are certainly issues here in the North region that we could eventually use this on.
